Oberlander Draft Horse Sleigh & Wagon Rides
Come
and enjoy the unspoiled beauty of Vermont with an Oberlander
draft horse sleigh ride!
Oberlander draft horses historically originate from Bavaria,
Germany where they were owned by farmers who used them
for both farm work and logging. They were also used year
round in Bavaria for pulling tourists in sleighs, wagons,
and carriages, and for special occasions.
Oberlander draft horses are known for their strong compact
frame and muscular bodies. They have a calm disposition
and are good natured and even tempered around people. Oberlanders
are eager to work, with lots of stamina, and you can expect
an outstanding work performance from them, compared to
any other breed of draft horse. They are also very elegant
carriage horses and are instant crowd pleasers wherever
they appear. A purebred Oberlander is an excellent work
and pleasure horse, and is a great source of pride to any
owner.
In 1993 Cherry Creek Ranch imported 4 Oberlander mares
and one stallion from Bavaria, Germany to British Columbia,
Canada. The first production sale held at Cherry Creek
Ranch in July 1999 sold 23 Oberlanders. Seven horses were
sold to Anheuser and Busch (Budweiser) of St. Louis, Missouri.
Currently there are only 37 Oberlander draft horses in
North America.
Merle Buck of Brookfield, Vermont is the proud owner of
the only three Oberlanders in New England. Sarah, their
mare, and Gallo, their gelding, are two of the horses purchased
by Andrew Busch in the 1999 production sale at Cherry Creek
Ranch. The mare, Sarah, was in foal when purchased and
now the Buck’s are happy to have her seven month
old filly.
